Tackling Waste 2008 - A Resource Efficiency KTN and WARMNET Conference for Postgraduate Research Students
University of Nottingham Jubilee Campus

The overall theme for the event is decoupling economic growth from environmental impact in products and processes; addressing the unsustainable use of resources and breaking the link between economic growth, the waste of resources and adverse environmental impact.
Both days will feature crossover presentations reviewing key academic and industrial priorities, with part of the programme on both days being webcast live to an additional internet audience. The programme includes senior speakers from the following organisations: United Nations Environment Programme; European Commission, Environment Directorate-General; Technology Strategy Board; Defra; EPSRC as well as a series of presentations by industrial and academic speakers demonstrating the latest innovations and research findings.

A drinks reception and networking event will take place immediately after the conclusion of the afternoon presentation sessions on the first day. The Conference Dinner will be held later in the evening at the University of Nottingham , and we are delighted to have secured Guy Browning, one of the countries top humorous writers, as after-dinner speaker.

Improving the quality of recycled material
London

As recycling rates grow the focus moves more and more from quantity to quality. Increasing quality levels not only helps authorities to meet recycling targets and divert more waste from landfill, but can help to drive more sustainable long-term domestic and international markets. Although the reasoning behind pushing for quality is becoming clearer there are still many questions concerning how to do it. Is producing a quality output solely dependent on a quality input? What technologies are available to improving quality at the sorting and reprocessing stages? Can high quality levels be reached from co-mingled collections? Featured speakers include: Liz Goodwin, WRAP; Joy Blizzard, Shropshire Waste Partnership & LARAC; Mike Brown, Peterborough City Council; John Woodruff, London Borough of Bromley; Chris Dow, Closed Loop Recycling and Dr Jon Pickering, Organic Resource Agency.

Are source separated collections the only true way to drive quality?
To answer these and a host of other questions, MRW is delighted to announce its 'Improving the quality of recycled material' conference.

Waste Reduction Schemes: is bin tax the answer?
Central London

Household waste is a controversial subject. Attempts by local authorities to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill have proved to be amongst the most popular and unpopular actions taken by councils. Getting it right really matters. This event will help waste practitioners to consider and decide the best potential Waste Reduction Scheme for their area.

Those attending will be given an overview from Defra about the pertinent legislation changes in the Climate Change Bill currently going through the House of Commons. This will be followed by a discussion led by Jeff Cooper, President of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and a workshop about using financial incentives to reduce household waste.

There will also be three case studies from local authorities who have trialed waste incentive schemes. Rates: LGiU affiliated organisations: £150.00; Non members: £250.00.

The Composting Association:  Turning Food waste into profit – One day seminar
Norfolk

Sponsored by HotRot Composting Systems. In response to the popular demand for the event held last year at HotRot’s Brandon site in Norfolk, The Composting Association are organising a similar event to promote the further development of food waste treatment. As the push for achieving LATS targets comes ever closer, NOW is the time to find out what you need to be doing to maximise your diversion and take advantage of the many opportunities which exist within the East of England. The day will be examining the recent Eunomia report which provides an insight into biowaste arisings in the East of England and how these can be best exploited. In addition, a detailed look at how you can select the most appropriate technology to match your input specification and what impact this has on both the operating and capital costs of the selected option. We will also be hearing from a Local Authority who has experience of operating a separate food waste collection scheme and overcoming all the barriers that this has presented along the way.

The afternoon will provide the opportunity for delegates to be involved in a number of interactive workshops including NISP, which will be operating a speed dating service between waste producers and processors. Renewables East will also be letting you know what assistance is available and there will also be the opportunity to see a small scale composter in action and a range of depackaging solutions the latter becoming an essential requirement if processors are to start taking in commercial food waste streams.

Following on from this, a visit to Greenview Composting in vessel facility at Lackford will be organised with transport provided. This site, as well as operating an ABP compliant process will be demonstrating their novel outdoor aeration system for the maturation stage of the composting process.

19 August 2008
Westminster Briefing - “Implementing Measures to Improve Business Recycling Rates Locally”
Hosted by The House Magazine in Westminster

The Waste Strategy for England 2007 introduced a variety of measures to improve recycling rates and minimise waste. Whilst the possibility of ‘removing the ban on local authorities introducing household financial incentives for waste reduction and recycling’ has received the majority of media attention, developing new incentives to improve business recycling must remain a priority.

As part of the Effective Waste Management series, this Westminster Briefing will allow participants to consider and share best practice solutions as to how to improve business waste collection and recycling rates for the benefit of the local and wider community. Key issues to be examined include: What potential powers would enable councils to further incentivise local businesses to recycle? What effect does the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS) have on councils’ ability to offer a competitive business recycling service? How best to negotiate with contractors to offer improved business recycling services and what are the best solutions to problems that commonly arise? What will be the effect of the end of the BREW Programme and Defra’s change in focus to “providing the necessary evidence to encourage businesses to change behaviour”? What non-financial incentives are available to encourage local businesses to recycle more? What are councils’ obligations regarding the collection of “schedule 2” waste from schools, hospitals, prisons, etc? How to ensure a strategic approach which promotes the minimisation of waste, encourages reuse of materials, incentivises recycling and discourages fly-tipping?

Should you/your colleagues wish to attend please book online.
